NSA hacked Mexican president's email, according to latest leaks

The United States has for years carried out extensive surveillance and eavesdropping operations targeting Mexico's government, according to new evidence obtained by Spiegel Online. The German publication says its information comes directly from classified intelligence leaked by Edward Snowden.  Chief among the allegations is that the NSA successfully infiltrated the public email account of Mexico's former president, Felipe Calderon.
Once the agency gained access, according to Spiegel, a top secret May 2010 report reveals that it monitored "diplomatic, economic and leadership communications which continue to provide insight into Mexico's political system and internal stability." The NSA's operatives accomplished this by exploiting "a key mail server in the Mexican Presidencia domain within the Mexican Presidential network," and additional documents suggest the US has continued to take advantage of this security hole — it's described as a "lucrative source" of intelligence.

On Monday, the Syrian Electronic Army sent out a tweet to The Daily Dot, urging the publication to remove a caricature of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from an article regarding the hacker group’s attack on Tango.
The Daily Dot refused, so the hackers broke into at least one Gmail account of Daily Dot staff. In addition, the hackers broke into the site’s admin panel and removed the Tango.me article.
The attackers have published several pictures, including ones of emails sent out to Daily Dot staff about the Syrian Electronic Army’s “threat.”

FISA court renews NSA surveillance program

The Obama administration has renewed the authority for the National Security Agency to regularly collect the phone records of millions of Americas as allowed under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
The United States government has reportedly asked the FISA court every 90 days since 2006 to renew an order that compels the nation’s telecommunication providers to hand over telephony metadata pertaining to millions of US citizens. The program has been conducted in near total secrecy, however, until NSA leaker Edward Snowden released top-secret documentation to the Guardian newspaper which caused an international backlash upon being published last month.

Snowden: NSA is ‘in bed with the Germans’

US fugitive Edward Snowden has accused Germany and the US of partnering in spy intelligence operations, revealing that cooperation between the countries is closer than German indignation would indicate, Der Spiegel magazine reported.
“They are in bed with the Germans, just like with most other Western states,” the German magazine quotes Snowden as saying, adding that the NSA’s has a Foreign Affairs Directorate which is responsible for cooperation with other countries.
